Advice for Caregivers of Sarcoma Patients
Dr. Leonard Wexler: I think the best piece of advice is: don't feel the need to tell people that everything is okay, and do feel free to take help. And I think this is true for parents of younger children as well as for married adults.
It's impossible to go through this journey just by yourself. It's a bomb that goes off in a family and shatters people for years to come. If you have friends who want to bring meals to the house, take it. If you have friends who want to pick the kids up from school and have them sleep over, say "thank you." Don't feel the need to be superman or superwoman and think that you can be at the hospital, be a caregiver to your spouse or to your child, go home and care for everybody else and still have anything left in the tank to care for yourself.
There are wonderful organizations out there that provide help to people in different communities. Take advantage of them. Reach out for their help, and the generosity of spirit comes through.
