Funding Basic Research in Sarcomas
Dr. Paul Meyers: Much of the research that we carry out is funded by the federal government through mechanisms such as the National Cancer Institute. But their budget has actually shrunk over the last few years.
If we want to do something truly innovative, to try something really new, we need seed money. We need money to let us try something and then go to the government to seek definitive funding to carry out the research on a larger scale. This novel innovative research is only funded through the generous donations of private individuals and foundations that support sarcoma research. So that research is truly critical to let us start new processes that will ultimately become the subject of federal funding.
