Molecular Diagnosis of Sarcomas

Dr. Dina Lev: The current way that we diagnose sarcomas is by more the conventional immunohistochemistry type of diagnosis. Unfortunately, because there are so many subtypes, it is very hard to differentiate, and two pathologists will give sometimes three different answers to what the tumor is. And I think that the way of the future is to have a more molecular mechanism of diagnosing sarcomas. So instead of calling them with the conventional names, they might be diagnosed based on their potential outcome. Having a large array and focused signatures for different types of sarcomas that we know their outcome and/or we know how they respond to therapy - I think that is the way that we will, in the future, diagnose these tumors.
