Sarcoma Clinical Trials and Travel

Dr. Richard Gorlick: So one of the biggest issues in doing clinical trials for a rare cancer like sarcoma is the problem is the patients are spread out throughout the country, and there are few centers that treat a large number of these patients. It forces individuals to go to major treating centers as well as [researchers] to do the clinical trial as part of a large cooperative group. There are a number of cooperative groups out there that do sarcoma trials, the Children's Oncology Group and SARC being among the more commonly utilized. The issue whenever you do a trial as a multi-institutional group is getting the commitment of the various sites to participate, as well as getting your patients to go to those sites for enrollment in a particular clinical trial rather than being treated locally.
