Sarcoma Treatment in Europe

Dr. Jean Yves-Blay: In Europe, basically we are facing the same type of problem that is in all western countries, in that most often the diagnosis of sarcoma is made by people who have seldom seen any sarcomas. The reason being that this is a rare tumor.

The best solution to try to address this issue, to my knowledge, in Europe came from our colleagues in Scandinavia and also more recently from people from the United Kingdom. Oganized managment of patients with lumps or small tumors which are located in the soft tissue [has changed] so that only specialized centers could be allowed to manage these patients, biopsy these patients and take care of these patients. This enabled our Scandinavian colleagues in the last 20 years to improve considerably the outcome of patients. And this is going to be the same strategy which is put in place in the UK. I hope we will have similar strategies in other European countries in the near future.
