The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative Releases Portable Guide for Newly Diagnosed Patients and Families

Ossining, NY (PRWEB) November 15, 2011- The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative is pleased to announce the publication of theESUN Guide for the Newly Diagnosed, a collection of articles that will empower and encourage those who are new to sarcoma. Information in the guide has been reviewed for accuracy by sarcoma experts and published online in the Electronic Sarcoma Update Newsletter (ESUN).

Now, for the first time, ESUN articles that are helpful for new patients and their families have been compiled into an electronic book that is feature-rich and easy to use on virtually any screen. The guide’s articles encourage patients through the process of diagnosis, treatment and survivorship, providing tips on coping with treatment side effects, seeking medical assistance and social support, and dealing with the uncertainties of the sarcoma journey.

The new guide makes use of technology that allows for easy navigation, zooming, and printing on laptops, desktops and tablet computers. A special edition is available for the Kindle, Nook and other eReaders.

The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative Partners with Experts Worldwide to Cure Sarcomas

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) October 26, 2011- The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative is pleased to announce that it has funded research in nine countries and published resources in six of the world’s languages. These achievements are a part of the Initiative’s unique mission to meet the needs of the global sarcoma community.

Sarcomas are rare and dangerous cancers that affect people all over the world in all parts of the body. They can be difficult to understand and treat, presenting numerous challenges to patients, physicians and researchers.

The communication of experts around the world can affect a single patient - and thousands of patients. According to Dr. Raphael Pollock of MD Anderson Cancer Center, cooperation is the key to success for patients: "International cooperation among the entire spectrum of sarcoma experts, from dedicated laboratory researchers to diagnostic and treating physicians of all specialties, is critical to achieve the best results for individual patients. No one country has all the answers, and we can only improve by being open to ideas developed by experts elsewhere."

Win two tickets to "A Night with Ike Davis"

<img alt="The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative" border="0" align="right" hspace="10" src="http://sarcomahelp.org/frontpagelogo.jpg">"Striking out Childhood Cancer: A Night with Ike Davis" is a charity event that will benefit the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative and Solving Kids Cancer. The dinner will be held on Sunday, July 17th, at 7:00 PM at Michael’s Restaurant in Brooklyn, NY. The family-friendly evening includes: a full dinner and drinks, a live interview with Ike with Q&A from the guests, a signed baseball item from Ike, a special event t-shirt, photographs, an auction, a raffle and a gift bag of goodies. The event is hosted by Linda Cohn of ESPN’s Sportscenter and other special guests. The tickets to the event run $200/adults and $100/kids (less than 16-years old). <br />
<br />
A generous donor has offered the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative the opportunity to give tickets to a number of families (12 people total - children and adults). This should be a fun event for New York Mets fans living in the tri-state area. <b>We will choose the families by asking those who are interested to send us a paragraph (400 words maximum) by Friday, July 8th, telling us why meeting Ike would be special to them. </b>We will select the "winners" from the responses we receive and send them a note on Sunday, July 10th. Please send your entries to Bruce@SarcomaHelp.org . Please include your name, phone number, age, and type of sarcoma in the note. We welcome entries from kids and adults. Good luck!

Young Osteosarcoma Survivor Fights Back... with Creativity

Annina Hanlon, a 13-year-old osteosarcoma survivor, is using her talents to fund osteosarcoma research. The following is a portion of an article published in today's Roseville Press Tribune .

------------------------------
Although rare, childhood cancer is the No. 1 disease killer of children, more than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes and pediatrics AIDS combined, according to the National Childhood Cancer Foundation. Yet, pediatric cancers receive little funding from the National Cancer Institute and other big cancer organizations.

"The research (for osteosarcoma) is advancing slowly because it’s rare and the funding is limited," Dr. Jolly said. "There’s more interest in the more-common types of adult cancer."

But Annina is doing her part. The budding artist designs greeting cards, which she sells online to raise money for osteosarcoma research, currently for the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative. She has already raised more than $1,200. The backs of the cards tell Annina’s story, intended to promote awareness about this less-known form of cancer.

"We all know about leukemia, but there are other pediatric cancers out there, too," says her mom Roma Hanlon.
------------------------------

Read the full story in the Roseville Press Tribune, and make sure to check out Annina's greeting card creations. Thank you, Annina!
