Two Distinguished Physicians Join

We
are pleased to announce that two distinguished physicians have joined our
Medical Editorial Advisory Board. We look forward to the contributions they
will make to ESUN.
Junya Toguchida, MD, PhD
Junya Toguchida, MD, PhD, is a Professor at the
Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. He
is also a clinical professor of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Kyoto
University Hospital in Kyoto. Dr. Toguchida received a medical degree from
Kyoto University. After completing the residency as an orthopedic surgeon
and obtaining a doctorate of Medical Science from the Graduate School of
Medicine, Kyoto University, he carried out a postdoctoral fellowship at
the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, Harvard University, Boston. In 1995,
Dr. Toguchida became an associate professor in the Institute for Frontier
Medicine, Kyoto University and also joined the staff in the Department
of Orphopaedic Surgery, Kyoto University Hospital as a chief surgeon in the
filed of Orthopedic Oncology. He was promoted to be a full professor of the
Department of Tissue Regeneration in the Institute for Frontier Medicine
since 2004.
Dr. Toguchida’s research interests center on clinical and biological
research in the field of bone and soft tissue sarcomas, as well as
tissue regeneration therapy for musculoskeletal disorders. He is currently
performing a clinical application of mesenchymal stem cells for the
treatment of extensive bone defects due to sarcomas. He is also managing the
sarcoma tissue bank for the multi-institutional scientific study in Japan.
He
is a contributor of more than 80 articles published in peer-reviewed
journals such as Nature, New England Journal of Medicine,
Cancer Research, Journal of National Cancer Institute, and
Oncogene. He addresses a range of subjects that includes the role of
tumor suppressor genes in sarcomas of bone and soft tissues, and the
molecular profiling of sarcomas for the diagnosis and the development of
molecular target therapy.
Dr. Toguchida is active in numerous professional organizations, most
prominently Connective Tissue Oncology Society (CTOS), of which he was
president in 2006. He is a board member of the Japanese Orthopedic
Association, Japanese Clinical Cancer Association, Japanese Society of
Tissue Engineering, and an active member of the American Association for
Cancer Research (AACR), Societe Internationale de Chirurgie et de
Traumatologie (SICOT), and Japanese Cancer Association.
Richard Gorlick, MD
Dr. Gorlick is
Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Molecular Pharmacology, Division
Chief, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, and Vice Chairman, Department of
Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine – The Children’s Hospital
at Montefiore, in the Bronx, New York. He is also Director of the Sarcoma
Research Laboratory and a member of the Albert Einstein Cancer Center at
Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He earned his medical degree at State
University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn, New York, and
served his residency in Pediatrics at Babies Hospital of the
Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric
Hematology/Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York,
New York.
Dr. Gorlick is an active member of the Children’s Oncology
Group (COG) and has served as chairman of the Young Investigator Committee
and currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Bone Sarcoma Disease Committee
and chairman of the Biology Section–Bone Sarcoma Disease Committee and as a
member of the Developmental Therapeutics Liaison committee. He is Co-chair
of the Osteosarcoma Biology Protocol-Companion to Therapeutic Studies and
Director of the Bone Tumor Resource Laboratory. Dr. Gorlick is an active
member of the Pediatric Preclinical Testing Program (PPTP) and is
responsible for the testing performed in osteosarcoma models. Dr. Gorlick is
also an active member of the
Sarcoma Alliance for Research through
Collaboration (SARC) consortium preclinical
testing group.
Dr. Gorlick has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles
in leading medical journals, including The New England Journal of
Medicine, Cancer Research, Nature Medicine, Blood, and the
Journal of Clinical Oncology. He is a frequent invited lecturer in
bone tumors at major medical meetings throughout the United States and
Europe.
