The Drug Information webpage describes sites that give detailed information about various drugs used in cancer therapy. We also recommend you look at both the Drug News column and the Clinical Trail New column that appear in most issues of the Electronic Sarcoma Update Newsletter (ESUN). Abigail Alliance

The Abigail Alliance is dedicated to helping create wider access to developmental cancer drugs and other drugs for life threatening illnesses. The Alliance is promoting creative ways of increasing expanded access and compassionate use programs, and promoting creative ideas to get promising new drugs to the market sooner. The Abigail Alliance is also dedicated to help inform cancer patients and their doctors about the www.clinicaltrials.gov and www.cancer.gov clinical trial ebsites and to make sure all trials are listed and kept up to date.

 

BCCA Cancer Drug Manual

British Columbia Cancer Agency’s alphabetical index of cancer drugs.   Geared towards medical professionals, the entry for each drug gives comprehensive information on its classification, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, uses, side effects, interactions with other agents, and dosage guidelines.

 

BioSpace

BioSpace is a specialized provider of web-based products and information services to the life sciences. This BioSpace website, called the Clinical Competitive Intelligence System (CCIS), which is available online by subscription to both individuals and companies, offers access to information on more than 5,000 unique drugs in various stages of development representing 350 disease targets sponsored by over 1,000 companies, and coverage of devices, vaccines and diagnostic products. There is also a free version of CCIS, which only gives access to information on marketed products.

 

Chemocare.com

Chemocare.com is a program of the Scott Hamilton CARES Initiative and the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center. Its website is designed to provide the latest information about chemotherapy to patients and their families, caregivers and friends. It supplements what you may already have learned from your healthcare professional. Extensive information is provided on individual chemotherapy drugs, managing side effects, eating well during chemotherapy, and what to do both before and after chemotherapy. The website also has stories of survivors’ experiences, where you can also post your own story, information of complementary therapies, chemotherapy news, a message board, and list of resources and FAQs.

 

Clinical Trials

The Clinical Trials webpage describes sites that contain information about clinical trials and/or sites to assist you in searching various clinical trial databases. A number of the sites on the Cancer Organizations and the Sarcoma Communities webpages also have sections dealing with clinical trials. Articles describing the results of clinical trials often appear in the journals listed on the Research webpage. These journals are intended for the medical professional. Clinical Trials are often dealing with new and experimental drugs.

 

Partnership for Prescription Assistance

This is a service offered by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA, see entry below). PhRMA leading research-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the United States. The site has a special section, New Medicines in Development, that can be explored for a extensive array of diseases. HelpingPatients.org helps direct patients to the Patient Assistance Programs that will best help them. The site contains a directory of all the member companies that conduct these programs and the medicines that are covered. It also describes how to request assistance. Programs supported by PhRMA members helped 5.5 million underinsured or uninsured patients to obtain more than 14 million prescriptions in 2002.  This online service is free and completely confidential.

 

FDA Cancer liaison Program

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Cancer Liaison Program answers questions directed to the FDA by patients, their friends and family members and patient advocates about therapies for life-threatening diseases.  This site includes “Oncology Tools”—approved oncology drugs, disease summaries, regulatory tools, and how to obtain access to unapproved drugs.  The site also has a listing of FDA advisory committees for various drug types, including oncologic drugs.

 

PDR Health

This is the online version of the Physicians' Desk Reference. The drug information on PDRhealth is written in lay terms and is based on the FDA-approved drug information found in the PDR. It gives consumers plain-English explanations for the safe and effective use of prescription and nonprescription drugs—explanations that are consistent with the information professionals are referencing in the PDR. Use this site to read about a drug your doctor may have prescribed to check for side effects, drug interactions, and other important information.

 

The Cure Our Children Foundation (Barry Sugarman's Website)

Also listed in the Information About Sarcomas section, this is a centralized information site to assist parents, families and caregivers of children who have cancer and other life threatening diseases. With a particular emphasis on Ewing’s Sarcoma, this site will assist in learning about a child's disease, current treatments, new and developing treatments, and holistic and complimentary treatment options. The site also directs the readers to doctors, hospitals and other experts specializing in particular disease treatment and to pharmaceutical manufacturers.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) represents the country's leading research-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, which are devoted to inventing medicines that allow patients to live longer, healthier, and more productive lives. PhRMA companies are leading the way in the search for new cures. Visitors to their site can search a database of new drugs in development and search for patient assistance programs of member companies.
